The island—at 1,800 acres, the largest private island among the 60 or so that make up the British Virgin Islands—has a rich lore, both as a speck of land and as a resort. Early visitors are said to have included Christopher Columbus, Sir Francis Drake, various German planters and privateers, and Blackbeard. The famous pirate is thought to have buried treasure here and marooned his men on nearby Dead Chest Island; they later washed up on Peter Island’s Deadman’s Bay.

Peter Island is a destination for casual dining with a little luxury twist. Deadman’s Beach Bar & Grill is located right on the beach with majestic ocean views.
